From the Introduction: "What happened in Cuba in the 1950's was so large and complicated that one single historian cannot grasp all the nuances. Many have told the story from different angles and with various degrees of impartiality and scholarship. One point of view that has mostly been missing is that of the ordinary Cuban citizens, those of us who were neither politicians nor revolutionaries. There were many of us who were not trying to change the country; who were just trying to take care of our lives. I will try to compress those lives into a very small color tile to be added to the large mosaic of the Cuban tragedy." This book is about a piece of land and the people who loved it. The historic name of the place was Desenganos which can be translated to Disillutions or Disappointments. It is written in very simple English with many Spanish words, most of them explained in the text or in the Glossary. The story is told from the first person singular (the author) and mostly in the present tense which gives the reader the feeling of being there. There is no poetic descriptions of the landscape or the people involved, and yet the simple prose has the power that only reality can convey. Readers of a certain age identify with the author's childhood memories even if they lived in a very differen environment. To the young some scenes would be almost beyond belief."
