Returning to the studio after a decades-long absence -- her last solo album had been 1965's live The Death Defying Judy Henske, and her last appearance in the studio at all had been as a member of the short-lived Rosebud in 1971 -- Judy Henske's Loose in the World is a more than welcome comeback that shows that the cult favorite's chops weren't diminished in the least during her self-imposed exile. If anything, Henske's voice is as full-throated and sassy as ever. Wisely, Henske and producer/co-writer Craig Doerge make no attempts to modernize her sound, either by misguided stylistic experiments or newfangled instrumentation. Acoustic pianos and electric guitars predominate, with synthesizers used extremely sparingly and tastefully (most notably on the atmospheric "Master of Love") and various horns and reeds for occasional coloration, like the growling New Orleans-style trombone on the opening "Mad Dog Killer." The songs are in Henske's patented folk-blues style, with her joyous humor and clear love of performing explicit in even the most serious songs. On tunes like the unashamedly silly "Tikky Tikky Gumdrop," it's like she never left. ~ Stewart Mason, Rovi
