FROM THE PUBLISHER-This catalogue was produced as a companion to the exhibition Musings of Mystery and Alphabets of Agony: The Work of Edward Gorey, University of Hawai'i Art Gallery, Honolulu, Hawai'i, September 26-December 10, 2010. These are items from John Corolla's Edward Gorey collection. The Corolla collection is the most extensive outside of the holdings of the Gorey House Museum, and in the late 1990s, Corolla donated it to Hamilton Library at the University. The exhibit's playful and elegant presentation suited its subject; looking through these pages is almost like walking through those gallery rooms. There are 114 color and black & white reproductions of Gorey works in the book and 40 photographs of the exhibit displays. The catalog essayist, Dr. Joseph Stanton, Professor of Art history and American Studies at the University with a keen interest in picture books, simultaneously guides the reader through the mysteries of Gorey's life and the great variety of paths taken by his imagination, inviting the reader to develop his own theories. As Stanton says, Any examination of his works reveals them to be perfect crimes that do not readily give away their game. A must for Gorey afficionados. inventory #41729.
