This is a book about people and family and a time period. The family is dysfunctional to say the least and it is probably the first book to really address this issue. Eugene Gant is a young boy growing up in North Carolina at the turn of the twentieth century. His father is an alcoholic, his mother, an opportunist, somewhat cold, independent and not traditional. He has several brothers and sisters all with emotional baggage. Eugene Gant is lost and his family is lost and the world, in the eyes of Thomas Wolfe, is lost. Even Eugene, the hero of the story, is complex and often not likable because he seems to have no footing. He is trying to find meaning and happiness and ultimately turns to books and education. It is clearing autobiographical. Eugene Gant is what Thomas Wolfe was as a boy. = The book is beautifully written and is seminal for all American literature that follows. One can clearly see why Jack Kerouac was so profoundly influenced by the autobiographical style and psychological insight into the minds of the characters.

Writing is Life
As a resident and an individual with family heritage in North Carolina, as well as living in a neighboring town to Asheville, NC; Thomas Wolfe's birthplace and original home, the swell of emotion rises to my throat when I think of or re-read Look Homeward Angel. Many people say that his life was tragic, heart breaking and ended too soon. People say that he did not live to realize his true genious as a writer. Thomas Wolfe was a master story teller who wove any reader into his story by the intricate ebb and flow of reality and fiction. The privledge is to journey along with his story as reader's will find their own meaning within. Wolfe has been noted to have influenced powerful southern writers such as James Dickey and William Styron. I agree.
