In the Kansas summer of 1873, young Meg Brennon is on the run from an abusive husband and struggling to survive as a traveling millinery-supply saleswoman. When her wagon is stolen by a rustic old woman called Grandma Spicy, a desperate fourteen-year-old girl and her mute younger brother, Meg stumbles onto a chance to truly escape. The unlikely companions travel to Dodge where land is free and Meg hopes to file on a homestead. Determined to start over, Meg pretends that her abusive husband does not exist, while living in constant fear of the bounty hunter her husband has hired to find her. Harassed and threatened by a neighboring cattle rancher, Meg struggles to maintain her farm. Through heartbreak and joy the homestead survives, leaving Meg to realize that she must find a way to free herself from the past.
