I do not get out much, and sometimes Mack, my husband will pick up a load of books from the NEW BOOK BIN at the library and bring home for me to read--or not read. He brought hom a big beautiful book, Long Journey Home, and I opened it to look at the photography--just outstanding?but I had no expectation of reading it. I always go to the Index of a book, and there I saw many references to a Michael Pace, and as a Pace descendant, I was curious enough to turn to his Oral History and read it. By the time I finished, reading this one oral history, I was hooked, and I real all 398 pages. Last week if you had asked me if there was an Indian tribe called Delaware, I might have said, ?Well, I think so --maybe--I dunno.? The Lenape Indians were in what is now lower New York, New Jersey, eastern Pennsylvania and part of Delaware at the time when white settlers came. They were given the name ?Delaware? by white people because of their location. They were peaceful, mostly agrarian, and were known among other tribes as "The Grandfather Tribe?, an ancient group kown as problem solvers and negotiators for other tribes in dispute. Their story is not as familiar to us as the ?Trail of Tears?, and one writer in this book declared that was because the Delaware did not cry as much as the Cherokee! But their hardships consisted of disease that decimated the tribe, then forced moves from their land to Ohio, then Indiana, Kansas, and finally into Indian Territory, which became Oklahoma. The book consists of three series of Oral Histories. The first were done in the 1930?s by a grant through WPA, and several of those were chosen for this book. Since so many oral histories were collected in the 1930's, the compilers selected ones who had a line of descent from one of the early Chiefs of the tribe. The second series were taped in 1968. The last and greatest number of interviews are from 1995, and record the efforts of many very knowledgeable and creative tribal members whose mission is to preserve and partake of all parts of their rich heritage. It is here that we see the power of Remnant. This is a great book . Read all or some of these histories. My guess is that once started, you will not want to skip any chapters. Look at the wonderful pictures several times. Ponder what you learn long after you finish the book. The book was compiled by two persons, and each step was reviewed by a member of the Delaware tribe.Michael Pace was one instrumental in the formation of this book. He can trace his Delaware ancestry back to Pennsylvania, and descends from one of their important chiefs, William Anderson. He was reared by an aunt who was a traditional Delaware, and he is somewhat fluent in their language, and very much involved in the culture, the dances, the traditional clothes and preservation of the Delaware way of life. He has been Assistant Chief, Cultural Preservation Chair, and each fall he is an interpreter of Delaware Ways at The Lenape Village at Connor Prairie Living History Museum in Fishers, Indiana. =========================== Do you know where the place name Manhattan came from? Minnatan is a Delaware word meaning ?place that is an island.?
