look for Lockie
I don't understand why these books are so hard to find. I just read Tim Winton's novel "Breath" which is excellent. The Lockie Leonard books are written for teenagers, but adults will enjoy them too. In fact, I honestly like them better than some of his adult novels. The descriptions of surfing, girl trouble, insecurity, moments of triumph--all ring true. WARNING: Do NOT get the American edition of these books. I picked up an American edition of this book and after a few pages I wondered what was going on. I checked in the front and it said "text altered for American readers." So I had to order another copy from Australia--and it was worth it! This is one American who says you should read the original Lockie. The Australian slang isn't hard to figure out and it gives the book a lot of its color and flavor (or colour and flavour). I heartily recommend all the Lockie books.
