Excerpt from Livelihood and Poverty: A Study in the Economic Conditions of Working-Class Households in Northampton, Warrington, Stanley and Reading The last twenty years have seen the appearance of several studies of the social conditions obtaining in towns. Mr. Charles Booth's Life and Labour in London, which appeared in 1892, was followed in 1901 by Mr. Seebohm Rowntree's study of Poverty in York, and in 1907 by Mr. Howarth's and Miss Wilson's book on West Ham while interesting reports on Social Conditions in Dundee by the Dundee Social Union, and on Housing in Manchester and'salford by T. R. Marr, were published in 1905 and 1904 respectively. The object of the Ratan Tata Foundation in publishing the following studies of Northampton, Warrington, Stanley and Reading, is to add to the knowledge of social conditions to be derived from those works both by the investigation of new towns, and by the presentation of material as to aspects of social life which have hitherto received small attention. While, for example, the figures as to the proportions of persons living in poverty will naturally be compared with those computed by Mr. Rowntree, the tables relating to the composition of working-class households p. 29) are, it is believed, novel. It is not generally realised that the only information which we at present have as to the economic conditions of households is that given by the census as to the number of persons and number of rooms.
