For his third vocal jazz album, upstate New Yorker Michael Civisca finds himself with a trio doing a set of standard and traditional pop tunes. As on his other albums, Civisca shows an uncanny feel for the lyrics that allows his phrasing, timbre, and delivery to shine new light on songs that have already been the subject of attention by a myriad of good singers. Whether it be a tender, pensive "I've Grown Accustomed to Her Face" or a swinging "On the Street Where You Live," the listener simply feels good after a single hearing. Civisca and the trio are joined on the first track by clarinetist Sal Andolina for his only appearance on the CD. The singer has a finely honed sense of timing, knowing when and where to come in on the beat as he demonstrates on a rocking "Bewitched." A good deal of the credit for the entertainment value of this CD goes to the trio, especially fine pianist Mike Jones. Formerly of Washington, D.C., he heard Civisca sing and asked if he could become his piano player. Thus was the beginning of an artistically profitable partnership. Civisca has managed to find a comfortable niche between hip, rather dry singers (e.g., Kurt Elling) and the full-throated baritone tradition laid down by the great crooners (e.g., Frank Sinatra and Dick Haymes), taking the best from both schools. He is one of the better romantic male singers on the scene and deserves much more recognition. ~ Dave Nathan, Rovi
