Considering how popular the Dave Brubeck Quartet was during the 1950s (even before recording "Take Five"), it is surprising that there are not more semi-authorized live sessions available. This CD from the small Jazz Band label features the pianist/leader, altoist Paul Desmond, bassist Norman Bates and drummer Joe Dodge on a pair of well-recorded 1956 radio broadcasts live from Basin Street in New York; in addition there are three cuts from a March 1957 appearance at Chicago's Blue Note (with Joe Morello on drums). Highlights of the cool jazz collection include "Stardust," "Stompin' for Willie," "The Song Is You," "In Your Own Sweet Way" and "The Duke." Easily recommended to Dave Brubeck fans. ~ Scott Yanow, Rovi
