This new children's book, "Little Bear: An Inuit Folktale" makes a wonderful companion for a cold, snowy Winter's day. The book is set "in the great white North" and tells the story of a lonely old woman who comes across an abandoned baby polar bear one day and makes the bear her own. "Ku-lu my little one, my little bear, my son", she sings. She lovingly cares for the bear, and, as it grows, the village children and then the adult male hunters become the bear's companions. Eventually comes the inevitable day when the grown bear can no longer be kept as a pet. With a last hug, she says "Little Bear. Bears belong in the wild. Go. Be free."
This is a lovely, multi-themed story about loneliness, life in the cold north, the relationship between humans and animals, and letting go. The story is poetically told by children's book author Dawn Casey. Amanda Hall's illustrations feature blue and white and capture the chill and expansive snow and ice of the North and the poignancy of the story. Inuit author Kelly Berthelsen wrote a short forward which points to the universal importance of stories as a means of passing along wisdom and knowledge.
The book is suitable for children between four and eight years of age. Parents and teachers will enjoy the book in their own right and will find much to discuss with the children. Wisdom Tales, which publishes children's books with spiritual themes from around the world, kindly sent me a review copy.
