This is a useful assessment of several writers who were critical to shaping heroic fantasy, or "sword and sorcery," in the end of the Nineteenth Century and first few decades of the Twentieth. As the introduction by Lin Carter points out, its greatest flaw is that it *does* cut off around the year 1940, and therefore leaves out the great contributions to heroic fantasy made by de Camp himself -- as well as the work of such as Jack Vance, Andre Norton, and Michael Moorcock.
Despite this flaw, the "founding fathers" of heroic fantasy are here: William Morris, Lord Dunsany, H.P. Lovecraft (better known for horror), E.R. Eddison, Robert E. Howard, Fletcher Pratt, Clark Ashton Smith, J.R.R. Tolkien, and T.H. White. The world of literature would be a poorer place without these men, and de Camp admirably provides brief biographies and summaries of the work by which they created heroic fantasy as we know it.
