Nichols, a medievalist, is a James M. Beall Professor of French and Humanities, and Research Professor at the Johns Hopkins University. "Leo Spitzer, born in Vienna in 1887, began his academic career in his native city. He had a rather distinguished career at the Universities of Vienna, Bonn, Marburg, and Cologne. In 1933, he emigrated from Nazi Germany and took up a post at the University of Istanbul, and from 1936 to 1956 was a professor at the Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore. It is there that he became a member of the Romance Language faculty and stayed for the rest of his career. His principal works dealt with the literary stylistics of Romance languages, particularly French and Spanish; he also did research in various areas of Romance linguistics. Professor Spitzer died in Forte dei Marmi, Italy in 1960."
