On January 31, 1865, the House of Representatives passed the proposed Thirteenth Amendment to the Constitution which outlawed slavery and involuntary servitude within the United States, except in punishment for a crime. The Senate had passed the Amendment earlier, in April, 1864, and the Amendmenr became law upon ratification by the required number of states in December 1865. President Lincoln, just beginning his second term, played a critical role in securing the House passage of the Thirteenth Amendment, both openly and behind the scenes.
Steven Spielberg's new movie "Lincoln" covers the last four months of the president's life and focuses upon his activities in ending slavery through the Thirteenth Amendment. The movie is a historically-informed account, It draws in part on Doris Stearns Goodwin's book "Team of Rivals: the Political Genius of Abraham Lincoln." Several renowned Lincoln and Civil War scholars served as consultants to the film.
The settings of the movie have a period feel, with much of the filming done in Petersburg and Richmond, Virginia. The performances bring to life their subjects, particularly that of Daniel Day-Lewis. He captures Lincoln's high pitched verbal twang, his humor, political savvy, wisdom, and melancholy loneliness. Sally Fields gives an effective performance in the difficult role of Lincoln's complexly difficult wife, Mary Todd. The movie includes a large cast of historical personages, including Lincoln's cabinet, many members of the House and Senate, Confederate political leaders, Generals including Grant and Lee, Lincoln's sons, and Elizabeth Keckley, a former slave who became Mary Lincoln's dressmaker and friend.
The movie interweaves the military and political events involved in the Thirteenth Amendment with Lincoln's personal life. It shows how consideration of the Amendment became tied to a peace conference between Lincoln and a Confederate delegation held at Hampton Roads late in the Civil War. As the movie develops, the enactment of the Thirteenth Amendment required the votes of 20 Democrats in the House. Many in Lincoln's cabinet despaired of its passage and advised the president not to push the matter. But Lincoln pushed on.
In many scenes of the movie, Lincoln speaks eloquently about the need for the Amendment and about its relationship to the Emancipation Proclamation which Lincoln had signed on January 1, 1863. In addition to the scenes of idealism and commitment, the movie is about the rough and tumble business of American politics. Lincoln told his operatives to do what they needed to do to secure the votes, and they did. There are many scenes in the film of horse trading and chicanery. There are highly realistic and rancorous debate scenes involving many members on the floor of the House.
Concluding portions of the movie touch briefly on Appatomatox and upon Lincoln's assassination.
The movie is thoughtful and historically informed. It held my attention throughout.
The movie offers an inspiring portrayal of an American hero. It shows the combination of idealism and rawness in Lincoln and in the American political sytstem of his time. I hope this movie about Lincoln may help us understand and appreciate our common past and prepare, with all our differences, to move forward.

Lincoln
The movie is about how Lincoln got Congress to approve the 13th amendment- putting an end to slavery. Lincoln not only had to win over his adversaries, but he needed a military victory in the Civil War. Otherwise, the 13th amendment would appear as a sign of weakness and desperation. Good acting! Daniel Day Lewis would get my nod for an Oscar
