Lincoln was not a supporter of abolitionism, the doctrines Of which he considered but he was earnestly opposed to slavery. The nation as a whole had expected peace after the passage of the Compromise Measure in 1850. However the new Fugitive Slave Law which gave the United States' Marshall power to deputize a private citizen to aid in the capture of a fugitive Slave had aroused a terrific storm of opposition in the north and resentment in the South, because many of the northern states had passed Personal Liberty laws, which nullified the Fugitive Slave law.
