I've been wanting to get this book ever since reading the Wittenburg Door interview with Simon Conway Morris. It lives up to expectations. Scientifically rigorous, as one would expect from a Cambridge biologist with a solid record of evolutionary research, it reviews a considerable cross section of published papers, and sustains the conclusion that life as we know it is not a random fluke at all. Given the chemistry of our universe, it is in fact highly likely. Are there implications for religious belief somewhere in here? Morris doesn't say that there are, he simply presents a wealth of factual data. But he alludes to the possibility, which is of course all he can do as a scientist. (Morris is also a confessed Christian -- but find a surviving copy of the Door magazine if you're looking for more about his faith).
The text is a bit thick for a non-specialist. It takes a bit of effort to read, and some of the more detailed and technical material is easy to sort of pass over lightly. But, if it were not detailed and technical, it would not have the credibility that it does.
