None but those in whom God's dew has been absorbed. Even in this life the thought of God's anger is too much for us. When David had sinned, and was conscious God's Spirit had departed from him, he felt as vegetation must be without the dew: "Day and night thy hand was heavy upon me: my moisture is turned into the drought of summer" (Ps. xxxii. 4). But in view of that day, when, if God's anger has not been appeased, there will be no more hope, what shall prepare us for that awful time? You have read accounts of the sudden firing of vegetation on some prairie, sudden, spontaneous, as it were. But no sooner has one plant caught, no sooner has the flame taken hold of some tall grass, than it spreads, as we say, to use an expressive phrase, like wild-fire, gathering strength as it goes. Swift, however, as the flames spread, the hot, sultry air travels ahead, and warns all living creatures of the devouring element that so closely follows. Then cattle hasten, and men, mounted on their best steeds, fly. Where? To the nearest river, and by the straightest line to it. Those who are overtaken are consumed by the flames, but those who reach the river rush out into its deepest part, where they may retain foothold, and there await the fire. Nor is it enough to stand up to the neck in water, the head must be constantly dipped to prevent the heat-laden air from scorching. This is but a poor and rough figure of the judgment of God which shall some day overtake sinners, those who have hardened their hearts against His love.
