Lifehouse Elements is a sampler of Pete Townshend's gargantuan six-disc box set The Lifehouse Chronicles, itself the culmination of nearly 30 years of work on his intended follow-up to Tommy. Though much of it was recorded for Who's Next, Townshend never abandoned Lifehouse, eventually completing it in 1999. It debuted that year as a radio play for the BBC and that play, along with selections of demos, experiments, and orchestrations, were collected on the box (only available through www.eelpie.com. Lifehouse Elements contains highlights from the collection, capturing all the joys and frustrations of the box. There's little question that there's some brilliant music here -- not just alternate versions of "Behind Blue Eyes" and "Won't Get Fooled Again," but Townshend-sung demos of "Pure and Easy," "Getting in Tune," "Let's See Action," and "Song Is Over." Still, it's almost as padded as the box, with a formless orchestral version of "Baba O'Riley," a remix called "Baba M1," and a remix of "Who Are You." That doesn't mean it's unsatisfying or unnecessary. If you're a hardcore Townshend fan, it's hard to not hear the demos and works-in-progress of the classic, official Lifehouse songs and not get somewhat thrilled, even if that buzz is diminished by the newer recordings. The frustrating thing is, once you hear Lifehouse Elements, you'll want to hear the rest of the demos and there's no other way to get those without the radio play, orchestrations, experiments, and ramblings that make up the rest of the box. So, Elements does whet the appetite for unreleased Townshend while preparing listeners to be a little frustrated by the box's blend of the sublime and stupefying. So, it does its job well. ~ Stephen Thomas Erlewine, Rovi
