They had heard the same or kindred calumnies before, which had been disproved to their satisfaction, and had not caused any change in their policy. There must have been some other reason. The real truth appears to have been that Ferdinand was deeply impressed with the importance of the discovery, and the vast and far-reaching consequences to which it was likely to lead. When he consented to grant the concession to Columbus he was sceptical of any result, and believed he was granting nothing of any value. But when he became convinced of the true greatness of the achievement, he at the same time became anxious to curtail, and if possible to withdraw, the concession. Fonseca, in the hope of gratifying his malignant spite, was only too glad to represent this contemplated breach of faith as wise and politic. He granted permission for voyages of discovery to be undertaken without the knowledge or consent of Columbus, and in direct contravention of his rights as Admiral. But it was his position as Viceroy that Ferdinand was most anxious to assail. His supersession, without trial or previous hearing and judgment, would be a very shameful and dishonourable breach of faith, but it was one to which Isabella was at length induced to consent.
