With its introduction by Margaret Mead 'Life is with People; the Culture of the Shtetl" by Mark Zobrowski and Elizabeth Herzog, is a foundational ethnographic study of the life of Jews in small-town communities of eastern europe before the major pogroms wiped them out primarily before and during WWII. The core of this study was completed in 1949 and it was first published in 1952 by International Universities Press. The first Schocken paperback edition was published in 1962, the sixth printing, the book that I have was published in 1969. I can't speak to other versions or earlier or later versions of the book but I do know that this book was republished in France under an entirely different title and that it contained sumptuous and poignant photographs of houses, architectural styles, ornamentations, living conditions, facial types etc; The edition I have unfortunately is bereft of all documentary photographs and it diminishes the value and perhaps the impact that this study must have had when it originated ( I am assuming the original edition, brought together under the guidance of Ruth Benedict, contained this compelling visual material that supported the brilliant observations made by the anthropologists. Their comments are straightforward and unadorned stylistically; the prose is lucid and detailed and poignant. The book's sections are "The Road to the Shtetl" (Intro), Remember the Sabbath (Part1), May He Enter Into Torah (Part 2) , Into Good Deeds,(Part 3) Into Marriage Part 4), As the Shtetl Sees the World (part 5). the book contains an extensive bibliography, a quite serviceable glossary of transliterated Yiddish terms, phrases and words, and a full index. Still and all a remarkable book that is easily a treasure to have.
