John Lothrop Motley (1814 - 1877) was a Harvard graduate and historian. After traveling in Europe he returned to America to finish his legal studies. In 1874 he published the Life and Death of John of Barneveld. Johan van Oldenbarnevelt (1547 -1619) was a Dutch statesman who played a pivotal role in the Dutch struggle for independence from Spain. After his work helping with the struggle for independence he was arrested by his enemies and with a sham of a trial was convicted and at the age of 71 was beheaded.
