Excerpt from Library of Universal History and Popular Science, Vol. 12: Containing a Record of the Human Race From the Earliest Historical Period to the Present Time; Embracing a General Survey of the Progress of Mankind in National and Social Life, Civil Government, Religion, Literature, Science and Art Stratford de Redcliffe, formerly Sir Stratford Canning, whom the Czar Nicholas spitefully called the English Sultan. Great Britain rejected the Czar's overtures, and entered into a close alliance with the other Great Powers, especially with France under the Emperor Napo leon III., who, in his desire to gratify his army by a foreign war, sustained Great Britain in her policy on the Eastern question.
