He had already said (Romans v. 3, 4, 5.): "We glory in tribulations also; knowing that tribulation worketh patience; and patience, experience; and experience, hope; and hope maketh not ashamed, because the love of God is shed abroad in our hearts by the Holy Ghost which is given unto us." This secret of the Lord is with them that fear Him. Some have been slow learners; but they have had line upon line, and precept upon precept, here a little and there a little. The golden links of Providential purpose and gracious helpfulness have never been broken. Heavenly aspiration has been kept alive, religious aim has never been wholly abandoned. The tunings for God's touch have never ceased. Every touch of God tunes the soul for another touch. "The answer of the tongue, and the preparation of the heart in man, are from the Lord," is an Old Testament affirmation true to its core as it was meant to be taken. Its meaning may be more clearly seen if we read it in connection with what the Apostle Paul says in the second chapter of his Epistle to the Philippians: "Work out your own salvation with fear and trembling; for it is God which worketh in you both to will and to do of His good pleasure." God works, and we work. All that we need is sincerity that will cause us to keep trying, and that is the one and only condition of God's helping.
