Then snow lay on the ground, and there was a most "blinding heavy fall" all day. The Swamp, as you remember, was frozen hard enough to bear. To-day Polly and Roy and I walked into the woods and swamps on Broad Rock. While there was ice enough to almost bear us, it was no such frost as our fighting ancestors had, and the superb day had not a sign of snow in the air, except that slight refraction from the sprinkling of snow which fell a few days ago. If the climate is not changing, we must admit it is a broad contrast to the weather of 1675. The Colonial Wars theme is in mind just now, as I have begun upon arranging the annual dinner which is again laid upon me. It is not an ungrateful task, and I have got Theodore Woolsey to talk upon Colonial Silver. I already have secured several fine pieces for exhibition on the evening of the dinner, December 3Dth. We shall have enough to decorate our tables, and then the silver pieces will be shown as a loan collection at Tilden-Thurbers' for a few days later. I expect to get some pieces from the oldest Congregational Church in Rhode Island, at Rehoboth, very beautiful and seldom seen--a chalice and alms plate--and two communion cups, also some from Bristol. So as the members enter into it with much enthusiasm, I hope it will go off well. You might possibly spare time to visit the collection, if it proves as extensive as I think likely at T. T. & Company. Peggy and her boy are doing splendidly. The Goddards are in an exalted condition. TO M. B.
