Seller's Description:
Unamed. Fine. A finely bound copy of Dorothy Osborne's letters to Sir William Temple. Illustrated, with three plates. In a Hatchards of London binding with gilt stamped detailing to the spine. Edited by English judge and dramatist Edward Abbott Parry. With the bookplate of Eric Sydney Hely Corbett to the front pastedown. The Corbett family ran a business called Whittalls and Co. which Eric took over upon his father's death in 1909. He was studying Classics at Oxford when he left to take over the family business. Dorothy Osborne was a British writer of letters. These letters are of her courtship with her eventual husband, Sir William Temple. The letters have been edited from their original wording as mentioned to the preface 'a reproduction of old spelling, curious punctuation and an old-fashioned use of capital letters that would render the letters themselves difficult to read'. In a half morocco binding with cloth covered boards. Externally, excellent with very minor shelfwear to the spine and extremities. Prior owner's bookplate to front pastedown, Eric Sydney Hely Corbett. Gift inscription to recto of front free endpaper, Eric H Corbett from K N L 1929. Binder's stamp to verso of front endpaper, Hatchards. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are generally bright though slightly age toned to edges. The odd light spot to pages. Fine.
