Excerpt from Letters: To Andrew T. Jusdon, Esq. And Others in Canteebury, Remonstrating With Them on Their Unjus and Unjustified Procedure Relative to Miss. Crandall and Her School for Colored Females A. Few days afterwards, i.'e. On the 97th of February, I was fur ther informed that she had made her intention publicly known in your town, and that the people there, were, in consequence, filled with indignation at her, especially yourself and her immediate neigh bors. Not having received from Miss Crandall any notice of her plan (though my deep interest in the melioration of the condition of our colored brethren must be well known in this vicinity, ) I at first concluded, that she might prefer to avoid receiving any assistance from me, because perhaps of her strong objections to my religious opinions. On further reflection however, it seemed to be my duty to proffer her a helping hand, which she would be at liberty to ac cept or reject as she might choose.
