Seller's Description:
None. Very Good. The first edition of letters, conversations and recollections by S T Coleridge. Direct from the library of the late Hugh Selbourne MD (1906-1973) a noted book collector and diarist. Complete in two volumes. With a forgery of a letter by Coleridge dated 1818 to the first four pages of volume I. The letter is to the endpapers and half title page. The letter is addressed to Mr Collins esq. Given that the text was published in 1836 and Coleridge died in 1834 it is highly unlikely that this letter is by him. Samuel Taylor coleridge was an English poet, literary critic and philosopher. He founded the Romantic movement along with his friend William Wordsworth. He is best known for his poems The Rime of the Ancient Mariner and Kubla Khan as well as his influential critical works. In original publisher's quarter cloth boards. Externally, generally smart with slight rubbing to the spine labels. Bumping to the head and tails of spines and to the extremities. Newspaper clipping to pastedown of first volume: 'Coleridge S. T Letters Conversations and Recollections, 2vols, small 8vo, clean in boards, First edition. Compiled by T Alsop who was tried for forgery. ' Forgery of a letter by coleridge to the first four endpapers/half title page to volume 1 dated 1818. Selbourne library stamp to verso of front title page to volume I and II. Internally, both volumes are generally firmly bound though strained in places. Pages are slightly age toned to edges with scattered spots throughout. Very Good.
