The purpose of this program is to show the importance of phonics in learning to read. This material is to be used as a supplement to other approaches. The reason for this is; Many words in English are not written phonetically. Several reading series have been developed using the linguistics or the phonics approach. My belief is through phonics, the child is helped to identify printed words. A lack of phonics in the reading program could weaken a child's chances of becoming a strong efficient reader. We know that this is not the only way to teach reading but, this program can help very much in developing phonics skills. The child will be able to respond to the sounds represented by the letters in the word and by parts of words such as: syllables, prefixes, suffixes and roots. I have started rules and activities for each one. The books have been written in a way that the parent/teacher or any person using them, can apply many to his or her own activities. The book "Put A Tune In Your Reading" starts with consonants an4 continues on with learning the short and long vowels. The rules for the long and short Vowels are also taught. Book One -vowels are review with activities (th-voiceless, th-voiced, the control r, or, er, ir, ur, ar, long o and short o) and also diphthongs (oy, oi, ow, ou, long o, i followed by gh, ed, nd, ew, ea and more). Book Two- soft and hard G, silent letters, schwa sounds, compound words, contractions, syllables, accents and more. Book Three- review y as a vowel, consonant digraphs, contractions, possession and more. I have written a book and audio tape about phonics. The purpose of this program is to introduce music and pictures in the exploration by children ages4-7 into the world of long and short vowels and consonants. I have completed 3 other phonics books: Book One: Vowels; Book Two: Let the Phonics Rules Speak; Book Three: Let the Phonics Rules Speak. The summary and the table of contents give the materials that comprise each book. I believe in a strong phonics program. Children can learn to use the phonetics approach to reading very early and with fun. I have used this material at length in the public school classroom environment with great success and have also tested it with individual students in home instruction.
