Two quarto (7" x 10-3/4") volumes bound in half green calf leather with gilt lettering and green marbled boards. Illustrated with 52 superb anthropomorphic hand-colored plates (including 2 title pages), 2 black-and-white plates, and numerous wood-engravings in the text, all after J. J. Grandville. Text by several contributors. Grandville was a caricaturist best known for presenting animals and flowers in human form and using them to satirize the French social and political milieu of his period.
