Au lendemain de la Grande Guerre, brise par de nombreux deuils, il abandonne la medecine pour la litterature (livres pour enfants et romans), la sculpture (principalement de monstres ) et la peinture. Familier des decades de Pontigny, il se lie d'amitie avec des personnalites marquantes de l'entre-deux-guerres, au premier rang desquelles Roger Martin du Gard. Il s'affiche par ailleurs comme compagnon de route du Parti communiste francais et jouit d'une certaine notoriete. Leopold Chauveau meurt le 17 juin 1940 et son travail tombe dans l'oubli. Ce n'est qu'au debut des annees 2000 que s'amorce la redecouverte de son oeuvre foisonnante.
