Aus der starksten Erregung heraus plotzlich, zuweilen allmahlich, versinken die Kranken in einen Zustand der Bewegungs-und Regungslosigkeit. Herrscht diese vor, so scheinen, rein ausserlich betrachtet, manche Kranke wie im Schlaf zu liegen. Gewohnlich verraten sie aber durch das Starre, Steife, Unbequeme ihrer Stellung, dass ihre Muskeln sich in einem Spannungszustande befinden. Sie haben den Kopf steif von der Bettdecke abgehoben, eine Hand, einen Arm emporgestreckt. Das Gesicht verrat durch den Ausdruck des Ekels, des Abscheus, der Angst, selten der Verzuckung, dass etwas in ihrem Innern vorgeht, welches sie bewegt. Ihre ganze Haltung erweckt den Eindruck, dass sie unter der lebhaften Wirkung eines Affektes stehen. Die Augen sind geschlossen, selten, wie bei der Verzuckung, weit geoffnet, stair nach oben gerichtet. Der Mund bewegt sich oft ganz leise. Die Atmung erfolgt oberflachlich, regelmassig, selten tief. In den Lidern haufig Blinzeln. Sprachliche Reaktionen sind nicht zu erzielen, auch nicht bei lautem Anrufen, Schutteln. Aufforderungen kommen sie nicht nach oder nur ganz langsam, zogernd, bleiben stehen bei der einmal begonnenen Bewegung. Bei passiven Bewegungen spurt man entweder gar keinen Widerstand, die Extremitaten fallen schlaff herab oder es macht sich ein lebhaftes Widerstreben geltend, welches mit starker Anspannung der Muskulatur die Bewegung zu hindern trachtet, die Lider krampfhaft schliesst, die Kiefern aufeinanderpresst.
