Written in 1867, Lee and His Generals provides an overview of eighteen leaders of the Confederate Army. Leaders profiled are Robert E. Lee, Stonewall Jackson, P.G.T. Beauregard, Joseph E. Johnston, Samuel Cooper, James Longstreet, Braxton Bragg, Richard S. Ewell, J.E.B. Stuart, A.P. Hill, John Bell Hood, Albert Sydney Johnston, Leonidas Polk, Sterling Price, Edmund Kirby Smith, John Hunt Morgan, William J. Hardee, and Wade Hampton. We learn about the background, education, and personality traits for each leader; nearly all the leaders profiled in this book attended West Point and served in the Mexican War. What I found interesting was how Albert Sydney Johnston served three countries: the United States, the Republic of Texas, and the Confederate States. The book makes frequent use of primary sources (letters written by Confederate leaders).
I have several take-aways on leadership from this book; the statements below serve as a list of leadership lessons.
Lee: avoid exterior emotion and remain calm and unruffled.
Jackson: perseverance, conscientiousness, and taking no excuses when duty is on hand.
Beauregard: clearness of thought and perception.
Joseph E. Johnston: possess a quiet and dignified manner.
Longstreet: calmness, determination, and iron endurance.
Bragg: sternness and discipline (but this does not always sit well with subordinates).
Stuart: clear judgement and untiring energy.
A.P. Hill: be present and encourage your subordinates.
Polk: be affable in manner and agreeable in conversation.
Price: mark your carriage with dignity, grace, and gentleness.
In addition to profiles of Confederate leaders, the book portrays Confederate operations during the war. The author, a former Confederate officer, does have his biases towards his subjects. And, some of the vocabulary may seem antiquated given the fact it was written in 1867. Still, this is a great book about Confederate military leadership during the Civil War.
