This book on General Lee takes a new look at his life and his views, as the General attempts to explain the whys and wherefores of his actions. The reader must have an open mind on this subject, because the author, a lawyer, takes a very legalistic questioning of Lee's positions. He puts Lee in the witness box. He asks numerous questions on Lee's positions on tactics, on political situations, both before and after the Civil War, on slavery, on the freeman after the War, and on Lee's loyalty to the US governement before his resignation from the army. The author questions Lee's answers on many subjects. The author makes the reader rethink his or her views on the Marble Man.
The author questions the objectivity of previous biographies on Lee, especially by Freeman, wrote a four volumes on Lee, which are considered the standard work on the subject.
It is worth time to read it and should be a requrement for any student of this historical period because it asks more questions than gives answers.
