A story of a widowed parson and his four daughters as he struggles with the complexities of raising them. Doris is the oldest daughter and takes over the reins of family governance. A story of the many escapades from which she has to rescue her younger sisters and the disciplines she metes out. Written with humor, it emphasizes and makes attractive the virtues of cheerfulness, simplicity, and self-sacrifice. Ethel Hueston (1887-1971) was a prolific and popular novelist during the first half of the twentieth century. Several of her books are set at a parsonage, including Leave it to Doris, her fourth book. Hueston herself was the daughter of a parson, the Rev. Charles W. Powelson, a minister who served many years in Iowa, at both Burlington and Mt. Pleasant.
