As a stepping-stone to this coveted distinction, he has purchased for his daughter the hand of Gaston de Presles, by agreeing to pay the debts of that spendthrift scion of an ancient family, from whom he hopes for aid, in his social and political ambitions. Poirier is too much a believer in the power of money to see that this is not preparing a happy future for his daughter Antoi nette, whom he loves as well as he knows how.
