Seller's Description:
Photos. VG in G DJ. The story of Laura Bridgman illustrated an educational event of the first importance showing that two master senses may be cut. Off with little or any apparent decrease of intelligence by the special education of defectives stimulated by Dr. Howe in masterly reports of the Perkins Institution. The deep psychological interest of Bridgman by her education and development by Dr. Hall who in 1878 made experiments with her listed in his monograph of technical study gives a suggestive illustration of her mental processes. This biography gives a resume of the remarkable phenomenon of 19th century education after Bridgman was stricken deaf and dumb in babyhood. The author's father, Dr. Howe, was the founder of the Massachusetts School for the blind, and unfolded Bridgman's courage, perseverance, and interest in life in a day when science and education offered little for the overcoming of a physical handicap. Brown binding, gilt lettering, orange DJ edges and spine somewhat faded and worn.
