"The last train for the north leaves here tomorrow morning, Our soldiers are scattered along the railroad as hundred miles north, and as soon as that train passes, the work of destruction will commence. The railroad will be completely destroyed and every bridge burned. Then both armies (the armies of the Tennessee and Georgia) will assemble here, and after destroying the city will commence the march. I fear their track will be one of desolation." -- Major General Henry Slocum, Federal Commander of the 20th Corps.

Last Train from Atlanta is a collection of quotes taken from eyewitness acounts of the Civil War events surrounding the fall of Atlanta. Unfortunately, the quotes are strung together without benefit of transition or perspective. Perhaps the only value in this book is for those who are looking for genaeological connections. While I did glean a few new facts, I was affronted at some of the writer's conclusions. Maps would have contributed more to the theme than the reproduced photos and drawings, and a good editor could have made the chapters more meaningful. In the preface, the author described the piece as a new form of documentary, and I find it dificult to determine what he could have meant as I could find no new style or personality in it.
