Italian description: La Rosa rossa a fiore doppio e certamente quella piu presente nell' antica Pompei, sia nelle rappresentazioni che nei richiami degli autori classici; essae stata variamente identificata, in passato, come una pianta imparentata con la Rosa gallica. Possibile escludere che in una Rosa rossa, rifiorente e profumata vi sia un contributo di qualche rosa orientale? In epoca romana in Italia si coltivava diffusamente il pesco (Prunus persica), una specie di origine cinese che i romani conobbero quando arrivarono in Persia dove era stato da tempo introdotto; la Rosa Antica di Pompei non potrebbe aver percorso la stessa strada? Al momento si tratta di ipotesi che necessitano di studi piu approfonditi, ma la risoluzione del mistero e certamente possibile.
