Esta obra es un tratado completo de la vida espiritual, en que se describe el camino del monje desde la renuncia al mundo hasta la perfeccion de la caridad. Es un camino que tiene lugar a traves de treinta escalones, cada uno de los cuales esta unido con el siguiente, en tres fases sucesivas: La primera muestra la ruptura con el mundo con el fin de volver al estado de infancia evangelica; es decir, la union con lo que el Senor ha dicho: la vuelta a la verdadera infancia en sentido espiritual, el llegar a ser como ninos, permitiendo al anima entrar en comunion mas profunda con Dios. La segunda fase esta constituida por el combate espiritual contra las pasiones, donde cada escalon se trata de una pasion principal, proponiendo la virtud correspondiente. El conjunto de estos escalones constituye el mas importante tratado de estrategia espiritual que poseemos. La tercera fase es la perfeccion cristiana que se desarrolla en los ultimos siete escalones, los cuales son los estadios mas altos de la vida espiritual, experimentados por los solitarios, que han llegado a la quietud y a la paz interior; pero son estadios tambien accesibles a los cenobitas mas fervientes. El ultimo escalon se dedica a la suprema trinidad de las virtudes: la Fe, la Esperanza, y la Caridad. Esta obra escrita por un monje eremita vivido hace mil cuatro cientos anos, puede decirnos algo a nosotros hoy? El itinerario existencial de un varon que vivio en la montana del Sinai en un tiempo tan lejano, puede ser de actualidad para nosotros? Sin duda que si, pues aquella vida monastica es solo un gran simbolo de la vida bautismal, es decir, de la vida cristiana.
