In 1972, when the world around him was making little sense, Sklar left college to volunteer at a community clinic in rural Mexico. Weaving together his time there, his later career, and his marriage, Sklar's memoir offers a thought-provoking meditation on the virtues of idealism in the face of the inevitable failures.

As a former medical student at the University of New Mexico, I briefly worked under Dr. Sklar. Also, I had the opportunity to spend a month at a remote clinic in Mexico with some similarities to the clinic described in the book. It was a pleasure to read Dr. Sklar's memoir, which weaves his later struggles and questions into a narrative that is influenced by his early exposure as a volunteer in a remote clinic in Mexico. The book does a super job of painting the picture of the plight of those living in rural Mexico, as well as the challenges of trying to help them. It also gives the reader a glimpse into the heart of a man who's doing his best to make sense of the world.
