Seller's Description:
Very Good. First edition. Four volumes. Quarto. Contemporary quarter morocco and cloth. Joints of a couple of volumes a little stressed but holding, spine ends a bit worn, and slight foxing to the plates, mostly confined to the margins, a very good set. Born into a wealthy family of textile merchants, Gailhabaud (1810-1888) devoted his life to the study of architecture, art, and archeology, and spent eight years compiling this beautifully illustrated encyclopedia. He attempted to make his works both authoritative and accessible to laymen, but his enthusiasm got the better of him and by the 1860s he had lost much of his fortune attempting to publish a monumental history of art. He was compelled to sell his personal library to the City of Paris for a large sum and a lifetime curatorial position, but the library was destroyed in a 1871 fire. Although his legacy suffered considerably from this reversal in fortune, his works on medieval churches and cathedrals are still in print to this day.
