With 12 plates, collated complete. With numerous in-text illustrations. With an engraved frontispiece portrait of Jules Janin. With the armorial bookplate of S. F. Widdrington to the front pastedown. Jules Gabriel Janin, 1804-1874, was a French writer and critic. Shallcross Fitzherbert Jacson was the nephew of Samuel Edward Widdrington (17871856) the writer on Spain. He inherited his Newton Hall estate, and Widdrington name. Bound in half paper-vellum and marbled paper-covered boards, with gilt lettering and decoration. There is only some mild wear to the extremities, with just mild rubbing and discolouration.
