Knights of the Crusades is one of several volumes from the Horizon Caravel series of books. This series describes significant events and people in world history. This volume is a portrayal of the causes, course, and effects of the Crusades between 1095 and the battle of Courtrai Castle in 1302. The book opens with a consideration of the role of knights at the Battle of Hastings in 1066. We go on to learn about the First Crusade, the Knights Templars, the Hospitallers, chivalry, and the various methods of weapons, warfare, and equipment used during the Crusades. Pope Urban II, Godfrey of Bouillon, Richard the Lion-Heart, King Louis IX of France, Saladin, and Baibars are among the leaders profiled in this concise and informative book. Numerous paintings, photographs, illuminated manuscripts, drawings, and other illustrations supplement the narrative and enhance the text. Three maps, an index, and a bibliography are included; what I found interesting is that several of the books in the bibliography are historical novels. While the Crusades were not entirely successful they did make an impact on history in that they contributed to the growth of cities and the end of feudalism; moreover, the book emphasizes that the chivalric values of loyalty, humility, courage, service, and courtesy are worthy goals for anyone in any future generation.
