Seller's Description:
Fine in Very Good jacket. 10.5 X 13" Tall. Dark green cloth covered boards with title impressed on front. Title and author's names in gold on the spine. Two very minor flaws on the boards, one front, one back. Dust jhacket has some wear along the top and minor corner bumping. Minor scrapes on the back page do not mar the wrap-around photo of loggers on a felled tree. Unclipped. Orginally released as two volumes in 1975, the two books have been combined as one in this publication. Fabulous reproductions taken from over 5000 negatives shot by Darius and Tabitha Kinsey in the woods of Washington State at the start of the 1900s. Giant redwoods and cedars are featured being felled by men with axes and hand saws. There are also family portaits and camp and homesteader life shots all beautifully presented in black and white photos. The authors, who are credited with being the 'producers' of the book contributed linking commentary (Bohn) and photo printing (Petschek). Includes contributions by son and daughter Darius Jr. and Dorthea. There are also numerous interviews with pioneers describing the challenges of eking out a living among these giant trees. A treat to read and marvel at the photos. 319 pp. This oversized and weighty volume will require a postal surcharge.

Seller's Description:
First edition by this publisher, possibly later printing. First published by Chronicle Books in 1984. Oblong quarto. 143pp. 41 detailed photographic plates. Dark brown boards, lettered in silver. A very fine copy with pictorial dust jacket. Darius Kinsey (1869-1945) was a photographer (in partnership with his wife, Tabitha) active in western Washington state from 1890 to 1940. He is best known for his large-format images of loggers and phases of the region's lumber industry. He also photographed locomotives and landscapes and (especially early in his career) did studio work. This work includes handsome reproductions of Kinsey's photos of the logging industry's steam locomotives, accompanied with historical essays by John Labbe on each locomotive and the logging operations it served, and excerpts from conversations with some of the old-time engineers, firemen, and brakemen.

Seller's Description:
As New. 1st edition, ltd to 2, 500 sets. Large 4to cloth in two volumes (bound in two different colors of cloth), with a different photo plate on each front cover. 157pp + 162pp. Stunningly illustrated with many, many Kinsey photographs of the Pacific Northwest. Many are full page. All are of the highest quality. There is some other illustrative material (Vol. Two has one brilliant color plate from the original tinted by Mrs. Kinsey). Volume One: "The Family Album & Other Early Work." Volume Two: "The Magnificent Years". As the introductory material says, the Kinseys "spent most of a lifetime in photography" in the logging areas of Washington State beginning about 1900. The photos published here were selected from 4, 500 surviving glass plates & film. The set includes well-written essays and just enough descriptive text to allow the photos to command most of the attention, as they should. An "as new" set, and in mint condition in lovely marbled slipcase, and with the slightly soiled mailing box. Published without dust jackets. In spite of the somewhat large number of published copies of this ltd edition, it is a very scarce & desirable set, indeed.
