All of the Paul Theroux travel books are good reads - I especially enjoyed this one and his descriptions of the people he met and their various attitudes about how the British fit into the rest of the world. He purposely omits visitng castles, and concentrates on walking as much of the coast of Britian as possible. This book takes place in the 80's, and you get the impression from the various people he talks to that Britian is living in the past. I was surprised to learn of the great number of people out of work, or on the "dole" and of the ugly industrial towns and vacation caravans that dot the beautiful coast. An enjoyable book I would recommend for a casual glimpse of the British coast.
