There is a considerable amount of business done in it, and many of the merchants and traders are well off. An effort was made some time ago to secure corporate powers under the "Towns Improvement Act," but it did not succeed, the population not being sufficiently large, without taking in two or three of the townlands. As a manufacturing place, Castlecomer is not what it was fifty years ago. Two grist mills and a brick factory have superseded linen and woollen industries. Some time in the first half of the present century, the daughter of the landlord started a flax factory and opened a spinning school, with a teacher, brought expressly from the North. The factory was burned, and the school was closed. The father of Mr. Michael Kennedy was the owner of the woollen industry.
