Not illustrated. 1901 Excerpt: ... that high ridge is a single isolated embankment, eighty-five feet in length, forty feet wide and four feet in height, each end of which extends toward the water nearest beyond. Between the Camp group and Ijower Mission Lake group, at the side of a pond, two small mounds were discovered, isolated from all other earthworks. Near the inlet to Island Lake, in Hubbard County, there stands a single mound of small size, near where a stone axe was recovered. Inside of the incorporated limits of Wadena, Wadena County, a copper spearhead, flint arrowpoints and potshards were found by Mrs. L. S. Griffin, and an examination of the place revealed the location of an ancient campsite near running water, where a deposit of ashes, charcoal and burned bones were observed. The forms of the archajologic material obtained at this old campsite indicate the identity of the ancient campers. That campsite was established and occupied by the ancient ancestry of the present Sioux Indian. Similar descriptions could be continued at length without correspondingly increasing a knowledge of the events occurring at the period of time about which these explanations have been made. It is intended to adequately catalogue the several thousand mounds, embankments and earthworks which have been discovered and partially charted, among which effigy forms are rarely observed in Northern Minnesota.
