Vice President Kamala Harris' historic bid for the presidency of the United States of America has enlivened and brought visibility to the small but high-achieving Indian-American diaspora. The Indian-American community is one of the most educated immigrant communities in the U.S. and flourishes in a wide variety of industries and careers. From politics to entertainment, entrepreneurship to technology, medicine to academia, and business to social activism, Indian-Americans succeed in all sectors of the American economy. Typical of the diaspora movement, Harris' mother, Shyamala Gopalan (d.2009) moved from Chennai to the United States at age 19 to complete her Master's at University of California, Berkeley. Eventually earning her Ph.D., Shyamala went on identify the progesterone receptor gene, a key to understanding and treating breast cancer. She impressed upon her daughters not only the value of a high-quality education but also on work that improves the quality of life for all people, lessons that her daughter Kamala Harris brought to her work as the former U.S. Senator for California and now as the Vice President of the United States. This evocative collection captures the rise of Indian-Americans across careers and shares the eye-opening saga of an enterprising diaspora unlike any other. The collection covers UN Undersecretary Shashi Tharoor, tech giants MR Rangaswami and Deepak Raj, Indian Ambassador to the United States Arun K Singh, and dean at the Carnegie Mellon College of Engineering Pradeep K. Khosla, and many others who helped shape the Indian-American community. Highly readable and insightful, this book is designed to provide insight into the forces and heritage that shapes the Indian-American diaspora and its most noteworthy and outstanding individual, Vice President Kamala Devi Harris.
