The members of Firesign Theatre got their start in FM radio, and at one point they played movies over the radio; with each comedy album they've released since those days, they've done pretty much the same thing but on vinyl instead of on air, creating radio plays that almost sound like they should have been on TV. Sometimes it's worked beautifully (Don't Crush That Dwarf, Hand Me the Pliers) and other times the wheels have fallen off (Not Insane or Anything You Want To), but Just Folks...a Firesign Chat falls somewhere in between. There are some clever moments, such as a brief reference to the war movie scene from Don't Crush That Dwarf, Hand Me the Pliers, but too much of it sounds like boring FM radio with a slightly absurdist twist. In the sections that sound more like a radio play, the characters are obviously written with some background in mind, but nothing compelling is done with them, and ultimately Just Folks...a Firesign Chat fails to keep the attention of the listener. Tensions within the group were already running high, and apparently the reaction to Just Folks...a Firesign Chat didn't help -- consequently, the troupe didn't pull together for another album for three years. ~ Sean Carruthers, Rovi Read Less
