It was not until the Luftwaffe took on the RAF that the aircraft was found to be sadly lacking defensively. The most successful version was the Gustav tank buster which entered service in 1943, and the most successful Stuka pilot was Hans-Ulrich Rudel with a tally of over 500 tanks destroyed.
